THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE
This was NOT photographed in a zoo. After 4 days of 12 hours surveying Kruger and examining the dense vegetation, we still hadn't spotted any big cats. Our hard work ended up paying on the 5th day. I never imagined being able to photograph a wild leopard from so close, full frame in 200mm without cropping. This photo was taken about 5 meters from the animal, when it came down from the tree which we were under. When this leopard realized that his hiding place was no longer secret.
He immediately started looking for a place out of sight. The magic moment lasted about 3 seconds and I was ready. I neither regret the settings of my camera nor my choice of lens that I have never changed so quickly under the effect of adrenaline.
These felines are discreet, fleeing and camouflage themselves extremely well in their environment. It is quite a challenge to capture them in images without visual obstacles in the season of dense vegetation. I am proud to have captured this feline with a delicate background of sky and greenery. When I met his gaze walking towards me and forking 3 meters from me. We both shared a moment of... Survival Instinct.
