THE STORY BEHIND THE PICTURE
I had been preparing this photo for several months. It had been a long time since I had in mind to capture an old barn full of details, worn out by the elements. It took me about 6 months to find the one I needed for its beauty, for the aesthetics of its surroundings and especially a perfect angle for the late afternoon sun. My long exposure would serve to add movement to my photography. A pretty windy day, where the sun was breaking through dark clouds, the kind of day where all the elements that have worn down the barn for over a hundred years have met. Funny fact: while asking permission to take the picture, a very funny and very carricatural farmer asked me what was beautiful in a barn. Am I the only one who sees the beauty in worn things?
The Black & Worn collection includes works in black and white showing the wear of certain elements in their environment. These works are all long exposures, giving way to the movement of nature which contributes to their wear. In an era where consumption takes precedence and where we replace rather than repair, this collection shows the beauty of worn, eroded elements which have faced the elements for tens, hundreds, or thousands of years, and which nevertheless radiate of a certain beauty.
Although this collection highlights landscapes, the message it sends is just as human. How many people have been worn out by life, but hold on and never give up. The landscapes of Black & Worn pay homage to them.
